Kelly Slater (EE.UU.) ha ganado el Billabong Pro Tahití después de derrotar a John John Florence (HAW) en la final con olas de ocho a diez pies en Teahupo’o. El último día de competición en la parada N ° 7 de 11 en el 2016 Samsung Galaxy Liga Mundial de Surf (WSL) Tour Championship (TC) ha tenido increíbles actuaciones de los mejores surfistas del mundo y culminó con la victoria de Slater. El último día se vieron 35 tubos entre los dos finalistas.

El 11 veces campeón de WSL Slater con su  55ª victoria CT  de su carrera salta del puesto 11 en la tabla de posiciones al 8. La victoria de hoy es la quinta de Slater en Tahití, ganando los eventos anteriores en 2000, 2003, 2005, 2011 y solidifica su posición como el mejor surfista en Teahupoo.

«Ha sido una de las mejores victorias que he tenido,» dijo Slater. «Tener a John John [Florence] en la final es un sueño para mí. No es ningún secreto que estoy al final de mi carrera. John John y Gabriel [Medina] están en camino y esos tipos son dos monstruos. John John es de todos nuestros surfistas el favorito, así que quiero ver cuantas series puedo estar con él antes de que haya terminado. Ël y Gabriel son los favoritos. Este es un momento muy especial para mí. Estoy feliz «.
