Las ranas, los sapos, los tritones, la salamandra y el gallipato forman parte del grupo de los anfibios. Estos pequeños animales, con más de un tercio de sus especies en regresión, son el grupo animal más amenazado, por delante de otros como los mamíferos o las aves.


 

Sin embargo, los esfuerzos de conservación se dirigen generalmente a otros grupos de fauna, con especies más emblemáticas. Con el tiempo los anfibios se han convertido en los grandes olvidados, pese a su inmensa importancia ecológica.


 

Por esta razón WWF, en el marco del proyecto de sensibilización y conservación de anfibios con Fundación Biodiversidad, se ha propuesto recuperar el croar de las ranas en nuestros campos, a través de un concurso. Otras entidades que colaboran en la difusión de esta iniciativa son la Red de Gobiernos Locales + Biodiversidad de la Federación Española de Municipios y Provincias, y la Asociación Herpetológica Española.



 

El concurso Rana busca Charca pretende incentivar iniciativas a nivel local que ayuden a los anfibios, por lo que ofrecerá una pequeña ayuda para llevar a cabo, sobre el terreno, los trabajos necesarios de la iniciativa ganadora. Este concurso está dirigido a la red de ayuntamientos de toda España. Hasta el día 1 de marzo permanecerá abierto el plazo de inscripción, con un período de recepción de proyectos que se alargará hasta el 31 de marzo. Los individuos, colectivos o entidades que quieran llevar a cabo pequeñas iniciativas pueden dirigirse a su ayuntamiento y animarle a presentar una propuesta. 

 

A diferencia de otras acciones de conservación, más costosas y con resultados visibles a largo plazo, las acciones de protección de anfibios, como la restauración de puntos de agua o la construcción de pequeñas charcas, son iniciativas de muy bajo coste y que, sin embargo, causan un efecto positivo enorme y casi de inmediato en las poblaciones de anfibios.

 

Estos animales, que presentan dos modos de vida, requieren tanto de un medio terrestre saludable, como de un medio acuático en buen estado. Por ello, cuando existen problemas ambientales en un lugar, son los primeros en desaparecer, funcionando como perfectos bioindicadores de la salud de nuestros ecosistemas

 

Además nos aportan muchos otros beneficios, ya que al alimentarse de insectos, son controladores de plagas agrícolas y forestales. También son una fuente imprescindible para la medicina.
